History of the Tenuta di Coltano
Originally, this vast area was dominated by wetlands that extended almost to the city of Pisa, hosting human settlements since prehistoric times and later during the Roman era. During the Middle Ages, progressive waterlogging led to a dramatic decline in human presence until the 15th century, when the Medici family began managing the land as a single estate, previously divided between ecclesiastical and private properties.
In 1568, Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici commissioned the construction of the Villa Medicea of Coltano, designed by architect Bernardo Buontalenti. The villa became the administrative and symbolic heart of the estate, serving as a hunting residence and linking political power, landscape and natural resources.
Under the Lorraine dynasty, numerous hydraulic and road works were carried out to improve the livability of the wetlands. In the 19th century, Coltano was connected to Pisa and Livorno by the historic Pisa–Livorno railway, further integrating the area into regional development.
In 1911, Guglielmo Marconi installed an important European radiotelegraph station here, used for intercontinental and radio communications—an extraordinary example of modern technology blending into a traditionally agricultural landscape.
Following the donation of the estate to the Opera Nazionale Combattenti in 1919 and subsequent land reclamation projects, Coltano took on a modern agricultural structure, permanently reshaping the territory.
