Lake and Marsh of Massaciuccoli – Wetland nature at the heart of the Park
The Lake and Marsh of Massaciuccoli form the largest back-dune wetland area in Tuscany and represent one of the most evocative and significant natural environments within the Migliarino, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli Natural Park.
With a perimeter of over 10 km and an average depth of less than 2 meters, the lake has lost its ancient brackish lagoon character and has evolved into a shallow freshwater lake rich in aquatic biodiversity and birdlife.
History and identity of the area
This area has been deeply connected to human history since Roman times. Settlements developed along its shores, including the village of Massaciuccoli, with residential villas such as the historic Villa dei Venulei, which included thermal baths that are still partially visible today, as well as rural centers linked to water- and land-based activities.
In the modern era, the village of Torre del Lago emerged alongside the first major land reclamation works and became famous thanks to the presence of Giacomo Puccini, the great composer from Lucca, who lived here for many years in a villa that is now a museum open to the public.
Over the centuries, the territory has undergone alternating phases of land reclamation, agriculture, flooding, and landscape transformation. While these changes progressively reduced the extent of the wetlands, they preserved a complex natural habitat of exceptional ecological value.

Natural environment
The lake and its marshes are surrounded by reed beds, marsh vegetation, and wetlands where open water, canals, peat bogs, and submerged or emergent vegetation alternate, creating a rich and ever-changing landscape.
The area is also renowned for the presence of sphagnum bogs—relict mosses from the last Ice Age—making Massaciuccoli one of the few Mediterranean lowland sites where they can still be observed.
Plant biodiversity
Wetland areas host aquatic and marsh plants such as reeds, sedge, and bulrush. Submerged vegetation includes hydrophytes that provide an important food source for many bird species.

Massaciuccoli is one of the most important birdwatching areas in Italy. More than 260 bird species have been recorded throughout the year, including both resident and migratory species. Birds commonly observed include cormorants, ducks, herons, marsh harriers, and rare species that find refuge among the reed beds and open waters.
