San Rossore Estate – A Natural and Historical Heritage in the Park

The San Rossore Estate is the largest and most significant natural area within the Migliarino, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli Natural Park. Covering approximately 4,800 hectares, it includes lowland forests, wetlands, coastal dunes, and woodlands stretching between the Serchio River, the city of Pisa, the Arno River, and the sea.

This estate is not only an area of outstanding natural value but also a place rich in history, culture, and biodiversity, bearing witness to more than a thousand years of interaction between humans and nature.

History: from the Selva Palatina to Park management

The name “San Rossore” derives from a lexical transformation of Saint Lussorius, a Christian martyr whose relics were transferred to Pisa in 1080.

During the Middle Ages, the territory was donated by Emperor Henry IV to the Chapter of the Canons of Pisa, who exploited its natural resources and promoted the construction of religious buildings.

In the 18th century, the Lorraine dynasty, successors to the Medici, initiated major reforestation projects (oak, ash, holm oak, and pine trees) and hydraulic works to reorganize the territory.

In the 19th century, following the unification of Italy, the House of Savoy transformed San Rossore into a summer residence and royal hunting reserve. However, many of the original structures were destroyed during World War II.

After the end of the monarchy, the estate became state property and in 1957 was assigned to the Presidency of the Italian Republic. Since 1999, management has been entrusted to the Tuscany Region and the Park Authority.

Landscape, nature, and biodiversity

The San Rossore Estate features extraordinary environmental diversity, where alluvial plains and dune systems alternate in a mosaic of natural habitats.

Types of environments

• Cotoni – ancient coastal dunes colonized by sub-Mediterranean vegetation and pine forests
• Lame – seasonal or permanent wet depressions typical of marshland environments
• Meso-hygrophilous woodland – forests rich in deciduous species such as English oak, ash, and alder in wetter areas

This variety of habitats makes San Rossore an ideal place to observe nature in all its forms, from dense woodland to wetlands and the coastline.

The estate’s flora is extremely diverse, ranging from the mesophilic vegetation of wet depressions to the pioneering plant communities of the dunes.

Location and how to get there

The San Rossore Estate is located just northwest of Pisa and is easily accessible via the park’s main access routes.

Main public access points:

• Ponte alle Trombe and Via delle Lenze – main entrances open daily (Summer hours: 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. – Winter hours: until 5:30 p.m.)
• Access from Il Marmo – a gate open to pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riding during park opening hours
• Access to the San Rossore Cycle-Pedestrian Bridge – a bridge for cyclists, pedestrians, and horseback riders that spans the Arno River, connecting the locality of San Piero a Grado (PI) to Cascine Nuove. Access is permitted during the Park’s operating hours.

Drivable routes:

Ponte alle Trombe → Cascine Vecchie → Sterpaia → Cascine Nuove are open daily.
Free pedestrian access to Zone C throughout its entire area and to Zone B along marked trails
Zone A is accessible only through guided visits or organized activities
